The Diary of a Teenage Girl is an acclaimed Off-Broadway multimedia theatrical production written by and starring Marielle Heller, adapted from Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel.

Set in 1970s San Francisco, the play follows Minnie Goetze, a 15-year-old aspiring artist navigating sexuality, identity, family dysfunction, and the complexities of adolescence. Told through Minnie’s unfiltered perspective, the story explores growing up with dark humor and emotional candor.

Presented at 3LD Art & Technology Center, the production incorporated live performance, video projections, and imagery drawn from Gloeckner’s original artwork. Directed by Sarah Cameron Sunde and Rachel Eckerling, the production premiered in March 2010 and was extended through May 1.

From stage to screen: The work was subsequently adapted into the 2015 major motion picture The Diary of a Teenage Girl, written and directed by Marielle Heller and starring Bel Powley, Kristen Wiig, and Alexander Skarsgård.
