Spy Garbo is a multimedia Off-Broadway theatrical production exploring espionage, propaganda, political power, and the manipulation of history.
Set in an imagined afterlife, the play brings together three controversial figures of the twentieth century: Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, German intelligence chief Wilhelm Canaris, and Soviet double agent Kim Philby. As they await legendary World War II double agent Juan Pujol García, known as Spy Garbo, the three confront their historical legacies and attempt to reshape how they will be remembered.
Directed by Kevin Cunningham, the production transformed 3LD Art & Technology Center into an immersive theatrical environment, using an expansive curved projection screen, archival newsreel footage, and cinematic imagery to surround audiences with the history of twentieth-century espionage.
Produced by Aaron Louis and Diane Morrison, Spy Garbo received a 2011 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Lighting Design, recognizing Laura Mroczkowski’s work.
